Oxnard - Port Hueneme Optometrist   Dr. Don Steensma   465 W. Channel Islands Blvd, Port Hueneme, CA 93041   805/486-3585

Hi.  My name is Don Steensma and I want to be your eye doctor.

This is the Age of Information and this website is an extension of my office out into the world of information.  My story is a little different than most optometrist's.

I was raised in Michigan but apparently did not grow-up in Michigan.  I dropped out of High School but still managed to join the U.S. Air Force in 1965.  I became a jet mechanic and grew-up in the Air Force.  The Air Force taught me responsiblity and the importance of personal development.  Anyway, after 4 years in the Air Force I went to college.  Three years later I had completed 4 years of high school and 4 years of college.   After 4 more years of Optometry College, I graduated from the Southern California College of Optometry in 1976.

After a brief position as a Clinical Doctor of Optometry at the optometry college clinic, I joined the optometric practice of Dr. Ralph Moses on Ventura Rd. in Port Hueneme, California.  After 14 years of optometric partnership, Dr. Moses retired.  This practice now has a history of over 65 years of optometric service to the community.  In 1994 the practice moved to our present location on Channel Islands Blvd.

Since my Air Force experience, I have always felt the need to improve my knowledge as much as possible so I have taken extensive optometric continuing education courses. In 1993 I  beame a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry.  This requires advanced optometric training and testing before being allowed to join.  As a Fellow, I can use the letters F.A.A.O. after my name.  Very few eye doctors can use those letters.

Ever since Optometry College, I have been a member of the American Optometric Association, the California Optometric Association and the Tri-County Optometric Association.

My optometric practice treats most types of eye disease, infections and allergies. I am licensed to use diagnostic and therapeutic drugs by the State of California.   I also co-manage eye surgery including cataract surgery and LASIK surgery with the best surgeons in Ventura County.

Our patients come from all over Ventura County.  Most live in Oxnard or Port Hueneme, but many live in Ventura, Camarillo and beyond.  They range in age from young children to older seniors.

I love my optometric practice.  I have lots of patients that I first started treating when they were kids.  Now I'm seeing their grand-kids.  Everyday is an exciting new challenge.

I am also a part time Yoga instructor.   I am a registered yoga teacher with The Yoga Alliance.   Give it a try sometime - Yoga can be life changing!

I hope you trust me to take good care of you.  I really do want to be your optometrist.
